Antoni Gaudí left behind a unique work from his Gothic influenced period in the town of Astorga: the Palacio Episcopal, or Bishop's Palace. It was commissioned by Bishop Joan Baptista Grau i Vallespinós, originally from Reus, as was Gaudí himself, who gave the work to the architect after a fire had destroyed the former palace in 1886.

Gaudí worked on the building from 1887 and his design was neo-Medieval in style, with daring architectural elements that were not understood by the Diocesan Board. When Grau died in 1893, Gaudí left the project and it was completed in 1913 by Ricardo García Guereta, Leon's diocesan architect.

But the building could not be used for various reasons until after the Spanish Civil War and, from 1964 onwards, it became the Museo de los Caminos, a museum comprising a collection of local Medieval art and a section dedicated to modern artists in Leon. The Bishopric of Astorga is responsible for maintaining the building and managing the museum.
