Cuixart i Barjau, Francesc

Berga 1875 - Manresa 1927

9 Painter

He studied at La Llotja, the Barcelona School of Fine Arts, with Claudi Lorenzale. He soon settled in Manresa, where practically all his output is, and worked as a lecturer at the School of Arts and Crafts. He painted mainly still lifes and works belonging to a specific genre, but also drew sketches.

Although he cannot be regarded as a Modernista, but rather an academic, painter, as can be seen in his paintings in the basilica of Santa Maria in Manresa, he sometimes used the new language, for example in designing the signs for the Tuneu tailor's shop (Carrer del Born, 7, Manresa; now a shop called Señor).

It seems he also designed medals, such as the Manresa medal, made by the Villamitjana brothers, commemorating the start of the French War, or Spanish War of Independence, in 1808.

He gave up painting in 1914 due to ill health.
